Presentation Abstract:

Virtual Reality (VR) in healthcare education is the “wave of the future”. But will VR change our approach to learning in medical simulation? What would that look like? And does VR support skills or rely on them? With the explosion of virtual and screen-based training over the past year of the pandemic, it seems like every other webinar or conference session is about VR, AR (Augmented Reality) or (XR) Mixed Reality.
While VR certainly is an exciting technology, clinical simulation champions must consider the devices can specifically support their educational and training goals. In this session we join the presenter in a discussion that VR may be considered a bold affront to any sort of learning pyramid. In this presentation we consider:
• How important VR can be in healthcare education
• Where it falls on the Spectrum of Importance (if at all)
• How it can impact progression from novice to expert
• If this is even remotely possible in the immediate future

Learning Objectives:

  1. Differentiate between Virtual Reality and Clinical Simulation Methodologies.
  2. Consider virtual patients as a core component of clinical learning and professional development.
  3. Determine how Virtual Reality can supports clinical simulation.

Meet the Presenter:

Will Enfinger, DCE, CHSOS

Simulation Operations Coordinator - Brookline College
William Enfinger is the Simulation Operations Coordinator at Brookline College. Pre-COVID he was instrumental in bringing in situ simulation to neonatal, pediatric, and anesthesia practices in 40 states using a mobile platform designed to enhance the realism of medical training for quality, safety, and competency.
For the past 14 years Will has been an active simulation enthusiast, combining art and drama with medical experience, a dash of salesmanship, some public relations, and somewhere between a thimble-full and a pinch of technical know-how.

He was selected to be part of a development board with the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and was active in the creation of the Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) certificate and pilot-tested the Simulation Education (CHSE). He has conducted courses in medical moulage and simulation methodology for the US military, various universities, hospitals, and regional simulation groups.

Will was an original member of the Gathering of Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialists (SimGHOSTS) –he has the hat to prove it—and is a current member of the Board of Directors; he is active with SSH and STORM Magazine; he holds CHSOS and is pursuing his CHSOS-A and CHSE and holds a certificate from the University of Southern Indiana in Clinical Simulation. Will has also been recognized as a Distinguished CHEST Educator (DCE) by the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP/CHEST).
