Virtual Simulation in Clinical Education

Clinical educators in higher education have rapidly embedded virtual simulation including screen-based simulations, virtual gaming simulations, virtual reality and extended reality in education. For many healthcare educators, different forms of virtual simulations are being used to prepare students for clinical practice or replace clinical practice hours. They have the potential to help prepare students for practice and promote achievement of learning outcomes in an engaging, safe environment. But adopting virtual simulation as a teaching strategy needs a thoughtful approach; medical simulation pedagogy needs to be applied. Without a sound pedagogical process to guide VS use in the curriculum, those outcomes may not be achieved. There is now a growing body of research on ways to effectively embed virtual experiences into an educational program to optimize learning. A newly developed workshop has been created specifically for educators who are using virtual simulations in their teaching.
