Combining Manikin and VR Simulation Technologies to Improve Clinical Outcomes

A product manager with an engineering background and over six years of experience in product management and clinical development engineering. She is passionate about developing innovative products that can make a difference in people's lives. Her prior work was at Momentiss Surgical in which she served as a clinical development engineer, focusing on the clinical aspects of the procedure, and quickly moved to focusing on the training & development side of the product, combining the clinical and simulative technologies to create the best educational platform for health care professionals. She is passionate about combining realistic and immersive environments as she believes this helps users develop a deeper understanding of the procedure, including the physical sensations and emotional aspects that they may experience when performing the procedure on a real patient.

Jeff Berkley, PhD, was the Founder and CEO of Mimic Technologies, which was established in 2001 and acquired by Surgical Science in 2021. He is a pioneer of surgical robotic simulation with expertise in force feedback, soft tissue modeling and data science. Jeff is currently focused on far-forward research and development. Using his knowledge of haptics, continuum mechanic-based tissue modeling and artificial intelligence, he’s helping Surgical Science create the next generation of surgical simulators. One focus for his current research is trauma training, which leverages mixed reality. This approach combines immersive VR with tracked physical tools and a mannequin so trainees can feel what they see in simulation. Jeff has served as a reviewer and author for a variety of journals, including IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Modeling, Virtual Reality Medical Imaging, and the Electronic Journal of Haptics Research. He also served as a medical corpsman in the US Naval Reserves where he gained experience as an EMT and field medic.

Lance W. Baily, BA, EMT-B is the Founder / CEO of HealthySimulation.com, the world’s leading medical simulation resource website which supports thousands healthcare professionals a month. As an experienced entrepreneur, digital media producer and administrative professional, Lance has the background and the experience necessary to help guide the healthcare simulation industry to greater levels of adoption.

Lance is also the Founder of SimGHOSTS.org, the leading 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to supporting healthcare professionals operating clinical simulation technologies which has organized over twenty hands-on training conferences around the globe since 2011. His new co-edited Book: “Comprehensive Healthcare Simulation: Operations, Technology, and Innovative Practice” provides 400 pages of in-depth articles supporting the technical integration of healthcare simulation in any sized program.

Formerly he served as Director of the Nevada System of Higher Education’s Clinical Simulation Center of Las Vegas, Simulation Technician for the LA Community College District, and volunteer Fire-Fighter, after receiving his BA in Film and Digital Media Production and working on Hollywood production sets. He currently lives with his wife in Las Vegas with their two young daughters and two crazy dachshunds.
