Presentation Abstract:

Students in the fields of healthcare undergo a process of Professional Identity Formation (PIF), in which they begin to think, act, and feel like a member of their chosen health profession. PIF is important to health professions because it socializes novices to their community’s values and standards, and promotes responsibility and ownership of patient care. Through research done at the Medical College of Georgia, three categories of simulation scenario design elements have been identified as contributing to the promotion of PIF in clinical students. This framework of clinical case elements, scripting, and learner role organizes a total of eight scenario components that can maximize the identity formation of learners during a simulation experience. This framework can be used to both refine existing and develop new simulation scenarios across the health professions.

Dr. A.J. Kleinheksel is currently the Director of Research and Evaluation for Educational Simulation and an Educational Researcher in the Educational Innovation Institute at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Kleinheksel has a PhD in Educational Technology and previously worked in the design and development of conversation-based virtual patient simulations. Dr. Kleinheksel is interested in health professions simulation, assessment, instructional design, and rigorous research methods.
