Mixed Reality XR and Healthcare Education:
What Does the Future Hold?

Dr. Gonzalez is the VP of Clinical Learning Resources at Sentinel U®. She is an internationally recognized simulation expert. She is one of 84 advanced certified healthcare simulation educators (CHSE-A) globally. In the fall of 2020, she was recognized by the prestigious American Academy of Nurses as a Fellow (FAAN). She is also a fellow of the Academy of Nurse Educators (ANEF). She is the President-Elect of INACSL for 2022. Her nursing career focuses on advancing the science of nursing education through the use of simulation and its impact on learner outcomes. Dr.Gonzalez has a very specific body of work that has resulted in over 20 data-based manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, and one clinical skills textbook. She is one of several scientists to have two patents: on Detecting Sterile Field Events and Related Methods and Virtual Patients. She is a seasoned nurse educator with experience teaching across the curriculum to include live, hybrid, online, and synchronous delivery methods.

DR. MICHELLE AEBERSOLD is a Clinical Professor at the University of Michigan School of Nursing and a Clinical Associate Professor at the School of Information. She is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Aebersold is an XR Faculty Innovator in Residence through the University of Michigan XR Initiative. Dr. Aebersold has extensive experience in using a variety of simulation learning methods including Extended Realities (XR) to improve the care of patients through caregiver education and training. She is currently working on grant-funded projects using immersive virtual reality to improve the safety of chemotherapy administration and management of pediatric cardiac arrest situations. Dr. Aebersold has numerous publications, presents on a variety of topics, and is often an invited speaker at international, regional, and local conferences. She consults with nursing schools about improving their simulation programs, developing virtual educational assets, and other projects.

Formerly he served as Director of the Nevada System of Higher Education’s Clinical Simulation Center of Las Vegas, Simulation Technician for the LA Community College District, and volunteer Fire-Fighter, after receiving his BA in Film and Digital Media Production and working on Hollywood production sets. He currently lives with his wife in Las Vegas with their two young daughters and two crazy dachshunds.
