Presentation Abstract:

Medical Improv is an experiential teaching tool that can be used to promote ‘soft’ skills such as; emotional intelligence, communication, teamwork and leadership skills in healthcare professionals. It is different from improv comedy because the focus is on learning instead of performing. In this emerging field, practitioners adapt the “Yes And” principle from improv to facilitate a variety of safe and fun learning experiences.
In this workshop you will learn about the links between these ‘soft” skills and important outcomes such as; patient safety, patient experience, workforce health, and cost-effectiveness. You will also discover how the “Yes and…” principle of improv is linked to self-awareness, speaking up, listening, sharing power, and even complexity leadership! And last but not least, you’ll get to observe or participate in some simple activities that will surprise you with learning opportunities you can use at work and in life.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain how soft skills are related to key outcomes in healthcare.
  2. Describe how the “Yes and…” principle from theatre improvisation can be used to facilitate development of skills associated with emotional intelligence.
  3. Develop one or more soft skills that you can practice and continue to develop in your professional setting.
