Feedback from
Dr. Nestel's CE Content:

“The best thing about this course is that I can work through it at my own pace, it's logical. You can see how the ideas build. And the access to resources is great. Actually, they're fantastic. I've now drafted my first Simulated role.”
NICK BLACK
“I'm an OSCE examiner and I've always wondered who wrote the SP roles or the stations. Dr. Nestel's course has made it really clear to me who should write them and how. I just never thought about getting patients and SPS involved with clinicians. It's obvious now.”
Nick Black
“Straight forward guidance on writing SP roles from experienced practitioners. There's an honesty about the content - what's hard and what's easy.”

Full Course Abstract:

This webinar provides an introductory opportunity to explore fundamental concepts in simulation practice. While it is designed for those new to simulation, experienced practitioners have also benefited as they explore contemporary content. There is a focus on simulation as an educational method. The webinar encourages participants to make meaning of the varied content in light of their own experiences. We explore the language of simulation within and outside of healthcare, acknowledge historical influences on contemporary practices, consider a wide range of simulators and their applications and review diverse resources. On completion, participants will have covered foundational content preparing them to approach healthcare simulation both constructively and critically.

Key Objectives:

  1. Navigate the language of healthcare simulation: Communities of practice are characterized by the language they use and the specialist nature of their practices. For this first objective, we explore commonly used terms and others that feature in simulation practices. These terms include briefing, debriefing, scenarios, observer roles, mastery learning, realism and more. Of course, we place them in context to offer greater meaning.
  2. List common applications of simulation in healthcare: Threaded through the course, we identify common applications of simulation in healthcare. We share our own and draw on others’ experiences. We link application to simulation modalities and acknowledge both their features and limitations.
  3. Outline the contemporary history of healthcare simulation: We acknowledge the long history of healthcare simulation but focus on the contemporary quality and safety agenda – this is the centre piece of most health services. Research on simulation has increased exponentially in the last 30 years. We know simulation works, we just need to better understand how to use it optimally. We have a look at other high reliability industries - to learn how they manage safety – and simulation is a key tool. We also learn how collaborative projects have led to the development of current simulators. With their origins in Resusci Anne, Harvey and Ms Chase, we now have access to a wide range of simulators supported by diverse technologies – virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed realities.
  4. Review drivers for the uptake of healthcare simulation: The course explores several drivers to healthcare simulation and participants are encouraged to examine those relevant to their own settings. Examples include: the already mentioned quality and safety movement in healthcare; the growing research evidence-base for the effectiveness of simulation as an educational method and in identifying system/process strengths and limitations; the ethical imperative of not causing harm to patients by learning on them when there are alternative approaches through simulation; and many more.
  5. Identify resources for building your healthcare simulation practice: A feature of the course is the access it provides to many resources. It offers links to professional societies, simulation journals, books, podcasts and industry websites.
  6. Describe a range of simulation modalities: The course makes clear that simulation is not a single thing, there are many modalities, and they are evolving all the time. Again, I’ve thread reference to simulation modalities through the course including the more common – task trainers and part-task trainers, manikins, virtual patients and simulated participants. Some of these modalities are also supported by different types of technologies including virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality.
