Presentation Abstract:

This webinar will explore a Transformational Model for interprofessional teams to address medical errors, a leading cause of death in the United States. Medical errors result in devastating consequences for patients and their families that adds substantial costs to healthcare. A key factor to medical error is communication within and between teams is cited as a major contributing factor to patient deaths due to preventable medical errors. Although Universities and Academic Health Centers aim to graduate competent healthcare professionals who are effective healthcare team members, the importance and degree of emphasis given to interprofessional education (IPE) across health professions accreditation organizations is variable.
To ensure a highly skilled, efficient and confident health professions workforce, a Transformational Model that focuses on interprofessional, experiential, performance-based health professions education will be discussed. This transformational model is relevant for high-risk, data-driven and increasingly technological medical era. The transformational model is two-fold. The first revolves around patient safety and patient well-being as they traverse through the levels of the healthcare system. The second fold focuses on the safety and well-being of professionals providing them care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the prevalence of medical errors as leading cause of death in the United States.
  2. Explain the Transformational Performance-Based Model for Interprofessional education application to address medical errors.
  3. Provide examples of how highly skilled and efficient interprofessional teams, trained through clinical simulation, are a solution to address the medical errors health care crisis.
