Presentation Abstract:

In August of 2021 the new and updated Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (formerly known as the International Nursing Association of Clinical and Simulation Learning standards) were published.  Included in this publication was a new standard : Professional Development.  This webinar will describe the evidence behind the new standard, review the criteria and discuss how the simulationist can meet these described criteria.  In addition there will be a review of the changes made to the previously published standards and the additional new standards.

  1. Review the development of the New  Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice Professional Development.
  2. Describe the criteria and guidelines for the new Healthcare Simulation Standards.
  3. Describe how the simulationists can operationalize the new standard.

Meet the Primary Presenter:

Beth Hallmark RN, PhD, CHSE-A, ANEF

Director of Simulation - Belmont University
Dr. Hallmark is a native Nashvillian, completing her Associates degree in Nursing in 1986 at Samford University, her BSN from Belmont in 1989 and her MSN in Child and Family Nursing from Vanderbilt University in 1994. Beth has been married to her husband Brian for 31 years, they are active in their church, Forest Hills Baptist, and they have 2 children. Allison, 25, attended Samford University and graduated in 2018 with a BS in Education and completed her Masters in 2020. She currently teaches Kindergarten. Mack, 22, is a senior at Mississippi State studying Business. Dr. Hallmark has been a faculty member at Belmont University School of Nursing (Nashville TN) since 1996; teaching Child and Family Nursing exclusively from 1996-2006. Beth has been involved in Simulation since 2007; she is currently the Director of Simulation for the College of Health Sciences and Nursing at Belmont. In 2010, she completed her PhD in Educational Leadership with a concentration in E-learning where she examined the impact of faculty debriefing training on the cognitive outcomes of students. She received her CHSE-A certification in 2019. She led the formation of the Tennessee Simulation Alliance and remains active with the Alliance. Beth is an active member of INACSL where she has served on various committees. In 2017, she led the SSH accreditation effort of the Belmont Simulation Center; the first center in TN to be accredited. She is a SSH accreditation visitor.

Associate Professor / Director of Faculty Development & Training, Office of Interprofessional Simulation
The University of Alabama at Birmingham
Dawn Taylor Peterson is an Associate Professor in the School of Medicine, Department of Medical Education and in the School of Health Professions, Department of Health Services Administration. She holds a PhD in Instructional Design, as well as an Educational Specialist degree and a Master of Arts in Education. She completed her initial simulation training and the Advanced Comprehensive Instructor Course at the Center for Medical Simulation in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dr. Peterson is also a TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer. Her primary interests are debriefing, interprofessional simulation, and faculty development for simulation. She currently serves as the Director of Faculty Development & Training for the Office of Interprofessional Simulation

Michelle Brown, PhD is a passionate educator, Associated Professor, and Director of the Master of Science in Healthcare Simulation program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
