Presentation Abstract:

Background: The SARS-COV-2 Coronavirus or COVID-19 has increased steady throughout the Southeastern United States (CDC, 2020). As of October 2020, the rate of hospitalization was 193.7 per 100,000 population (CDC, 2020). According to the Florida Department of Health as of October,771,780 cases of COVID-19 have been diagnosed since the begin of the Pandemic. Currently, area hospitals are not allowing nursing students to care of known COVID-19 positive patients on COVID units.

Initiative: To prepare senior nursing students to enter the workforce after graduation ready care for moderately ill hospitalized COVID-19. Our goal was to provide current COVID-19 disease knowledge and treatments to our senior nursing students to prepared them for entry into clinical practice. A COVID-19 simulation was designed for a patient with moderate COVID-19 disease displaying fever, hypoxia, and dyspnea. This was accomplished by having all senior nursing students participate in the COVID-19 respiratory distress simulation.

Outcome: Following participation in the COVID-19 simulation students were able to recognize declining respiratory status, identify interventions for hypoxia, dyspnea, and fever associated with moderate COVID-19 disease. Conclusion: The COVID-19 virus has severely impacted the way prelicensure nursing education is provided. Current COVID-19 guidelines necessary to prevent disease transmission to nursing students also place nursing students at a disadvantage in preparing them to enter clinical practice. As COVID-19 knowledge continues to evolve, simulation allows students to gain practical knowledge in caring for moderately ill COVID-19 patients. The results of the SET-M tool have been positive for this new simulation.
