Overview of U.S. Army Competency Based Training and the Role of Simulation, Data and
Learning Engineering

Dr. Goldberg will review his research program centered on next generation adaptive training management tools in support of the Army's Synthetic Training Environment (STE). STE is a new program of record that will provide a set of core simulation-based training assets that support individual and collective training requirements across a broad spectrum of competencies and tasks. Dr. Goldberg and his team are directly researching and developing adaptive training tools and solutions that emphasize the use of data, artificial intelligence, and evidence-centered experiential learning design to optimize the effectiveness of an immersive training experience. To achieve this, four primary capability objectives were defined: (1) Automated assessment and contextualization on multi-modal data, (2) Intelligent coaching and feedback during and after a scenario, (3) Persistent performance tracking for competency and skill acquisition modeling, and (4) Decision support tools to assist in training progression and deliberate practice. Dr. Goldberg will review the background and necessity driving this research, along with an overview of projects and progress aligned to these objectives. This will be followed by an introduction to the open source technologies, data standards, and generalized approaches being utilized to drive study design and execution. This will highlight the extensibility of the tools and methods applied and how they can be aligned to new industries, competencies, and the tasks comprised within.
